Save the following dates for the 2019-20 robotics season.
Note: All dates are subject to change and all students should routinely check their robotics team calendar accessed via their gmail account to confirm the dates. This summary is provided so that parents have a general idea of what is to come so they can plan ahead.

  • Robotics Team Meetings are Wednesdays 6:30 – 9:30pm at the old East Cobb Middle School (ECMS) aka Destination Einstein build site.
  • Programming and Build Team Meetings are Thursdays 6:30 – 9:30pm at ECMS. Students must ask team leads which meetings are invite-only or open to all students.
  • Tom Joyner Family Reunion event at NASA, August 28 – Sept 1st. A small group of our team exhibited a robotics demo at a local radio host’s family event in Orlando.
  • CAD Training Sessions are in Mr Benton’s room at Walton High School after school on Mondays 3:30 – 5:30pm. They occur on all Mondays from Sept 9 through Oct 28, except for fall break.
  • Georgia FIRST Robotics Symposium at Kennesaw State University is on Saturday, Sept 7, 2019, 7:30 – 3:30pm.
  • Mindfulness Session at ECMS on October 5, 2019 from 10:00-11:00am. Volunteer teachers from IAHV( International Association for Human Values) have graciously agreed to teach us techniques on how to reduce stress and anxiety. While walk-ins are welcome, it is requested that you RSVP by October 3rd.
  • GirlsFIRST Workshop being hosted by our team on October 19, 2019 from 9:00-4:00pm at Walton High School.
  • SCRIW at Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina is on Saturday, Oct 26th, 8:00 – 6:00pm.
    • A small group from our team will be competing in this event, called the South Carolina Robotics Invitational and Workshops (SCRIW).  27 FRC teams from across the southeast will compete using last year’s 2019 game, DESTINATION: DEEP SPACE before the 2020 game is revealed. Dreher High is located at 3319 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205.  Drive time from East Cobb is about 3 1/2 hours without traffic and stops.
  • GRITS 2019 at Kell High School is on Saturday, November 2, 2019, 8:00 – 7:00pm with dinner afterward at ECMS.  Our team will be competing in this event, called the Georgia Robotics Invitational Tournament and Showcase (GRITS).  All team members are expected to attend this competition.
    • All team members are invited, however, each student must meet the following requirements to participate in this event:
      • 25 hours of participation
      • 10 hours of outreach
      • Completed Safety Training
      • 2 other trainings, other than safety
    • All parents are encouraged to come and watch this competition since it conveniently located.  Kell High School is at 4770 Lee Waters Road, Marietta, GA 30066 and is about a 20 minutes northwest of Walton High School. Teams compete using the game they played last season 2019-20.
  • Walton Robotics is hosting a FIRST Lego League (FLL) Regional Tournament at Walton High School on Dec 7, 2019. Please save the date as this outreach event will require many volunteers to be successful. To give you an idea of what this event is like, check out the video from when we hosted this event in 2016.
  • FRC Kickoff Broadcast is Saturday, Jan 4, 2020 at 10:30am. This is when the new game specifications will be announced.  This marks the beginning of the design and build season.
  • Mandatory Parent Travel Meeting on February 26, 2020 at 6:30pm at ECMS. This meeting is to discuss travel arrangements.
  • Robot Relay at Walton High School will be in the spring semester.
  • Dalton Regional Qualifier Competition in Dalton, GA is March 5-7, 2020 at the Dalton Convention Center. Our team will be attending this competition.
  • Carollton Regional Qualifier Competition in Carollton, GA is March 20-22 at the University of West Georgia Coliseum. Note: We are waiting on final confirmation for this event. An email will be sent once it is confirmed.
  • FRC Peachtree State Championship at Mercer University in Macon, GA is April 1-4, 2020. This event is on the first weekend of Spring Break, so please adjust your travel plans accordingly.
  • FIRST World Championship in Houston is April 15 – 18, 2020.  If our team qualifies to go to the World Championship, the team will likely leave on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 and return on Saturday, April 18, 2020.  This event is held at the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida De Las Americas, Houston, TX 77010.

Robotics Season Breakdown:

  • Fall is the training and outreach part of the season.  This is a time to get organized, learn skills and spread awareness of robotics everywhere.
  • January and February is the designing and building part of the season. This is when the game specifications are announced and teams can start designing and building their robots.  Keep in mind that February Break is in the middle of this frantic effort.  
  • March and April is the competition part of the season.  Keep in mind that the first weekend of Spring Break is the State Championship event.
