Girls FIRST is an organization aimed at increasing awareness of STEM for middle and high school girls. Girls FIRST (high school) has been active since 2014, and Girls FIRST Jr (middle school) was founded in 2017 by one of our alumni, Selina Nie.
A Girls FIRST event consists of an all day workshop where we provide a ton of activities and presentations to get girls excited about STEM! We invite professional women in STEM fields to present and answer questions about what it’s like to work in their field, as well as what challenges they may face. Through this, girls can learn about what careers might be good for them, and how they can be prepared for future jobs.
We also conduct fun engineering and programming activities where girls get hands-on experience in building and coding. The engineering activity consists of a unique challenge in which the girls must use teamwork and the engineering design process to make the best result for whatever the challenge may be. The programming activity is a small demonstration where girls can learn how to write basic code and program a device to perform a task! Along side these activities, we let the girls try driving our own 120 lb robots around a 54 foot field!
In between all the activities, we provide free lunch where girls have the opportunity to take pictures in our photo booth set with props, white boards, signs, and more. After the event, we’ll share the photos for everyone to see and share!
